Phanpy enters the Paldean Fates set as a Fighting-type Basic Pokémon with decent HP, but can it roll its way into competitive play? This cute elephant might seem unassuming at first glance, but let's examine whether this riverbank dweller has what it takes to make a splash in the current meta or if it's just playing in the mud.

Offensive Score Image Offensive rating: 3/10

Phanpy's offensive capabilities are quite underwhelming.

With just two attacks, neither offering any additional effects, it's limited to straightforward damage output.

Strength deals 30 damage for two Colorless energy, giving modest efficiency but lacking impact.

Rolling Tackle requires a hefty three energy (two Fighting and one Colorless) for just 60 damage.

This damage-to-energy ratio is poor by current standards, especially considering the attack has no secondary effects.

At 20 damage per energy for its best attack, Phanpy struggles to threaten KOs against most relevant Pokémon in the format and fails to provide any utility through its attacks.

Survival Score Image Survival rating: 4/10

With 80 HP, Phanpy sits at the lower end of the spectrum for Basic Pokémon.

While not the lowest, it's still vulnerable to being knocked out in a single hit by many meta attackers.

Its Grass weakness is a significant liability with the prevalence of Grass-type attackers in the current format.

A retreat cost of two energy is relatively high for such a low-HP Pokémon, forcing players to commit resources to switch it out or rely on switching cards.

Without any built-in defensive abilities or effects that could mitigate damage or provide protection, Phanpy is essentially a sitting target once in the active position.

Versatility Score Image Versatility rating: 2/10

Phanpy offers minimal versatility in deck construction and gameplay.

As a Basic Pokémon that evolves into Donphan, its primary function is to serve as an evolution base.

However, it brings nothing to the table while waiting to evolve - no ability, no beneficial attack effects, and no unique typing advantage that would make it valuable in specific matchups.

Its Fighting type gives it theoretical advantages against Dark, Steel, and Lightning types, but without meaningful damage output, these type advantages are largely moot.

Phanpy can't pivot between roles and essentially serves only as evolution fodder, severely limiting its versatility in competitive play.

setup Score Image Speed/Setup rating: 5/10

Phanpy's setup requirements are moderate but poorly rewarded.

As a Basic Pokémon, it can be played immediately, which is its only advantage.

However, its best attack requires three energy attachments, meaning you'll need at least three turns of energy attachment (or energy acceleration support) to power it up.

This slow setup pace is particularly problematic given the underwhelming payoff of just 60 damage.

While being searchable through standard Basic Pokémon search cards like Nest Ball or Ultra Ball, Phanpy offers nothing special in terms of consistency advantages.

For a card that primarily serves as evolution material, the high energy investment needed for its attacks creates an unnecessary burden.

Phanpy's primary value lies in its evolution into Donphan, so pairing it with cards that accelerate evolution and protect it until it can evolve is crucial.

Energy acceleration partners can help overcome its expensive attack costs, while Item and Supporter cards that increase draw consistency will help find evolution pieces quickly.

Perfect Partners examples:

Bypasses the need to keep Phanpy in play for a turn, allowing immediate evolution into Donphan from hand if you have the evolution card ready.

Helps search for Evolution Pokémon, increasing your chances of finding Donphan quickly to evolve from Phanpy.

Allows you to search for both Phanpy and a Water Energy card, helping set up your board while building toward evolution.

Phanpy from Paldean Fates ultimately falls short as a competitive card in its own right.

Its value is almost entirely tied to being an evolution base for Donphan, with little to offer during the turns it sits on your bench or, worse, in the active position.

The combination of mediocre HP, expensive attacks with low damage output, and no special abilities or effects makes it a liability in most situations.

If using Phanpy, your strategy should focus on evolving it as quickly as possible or protecting it until evolution.

Consider cards that accelerate evolution like Rare Candy, provide energy acceleration, or offer protective effects.

In the current fast-paced meta, Phanpy simply doesn't have the offensive power, survival capabilities, versatility, or setup efficiency to justify inclusion in competitive decks unless a particularly powerful Donphan evolution makes the evolution line worthwhile.
