Petilil enters the arena as a cute but unassuming Grass-type Basic Pokémon with 60 HP.

While it might not immediately catch your eye in a sea of flashier cards, this small plant Pokémon offers some interesting defensive capabilities that could surprise opponents in the right situation.

Offensive Score Image Offensive rating: 2/10

Petilil's offensive capabilities are minimal at best.

With only two attacks at its disposal, neither packs much of a punch.

'Leafage' deals a mere 10 damage for one Grass Energy, which falls significantly below the damage-per-energy curve in the current meta.

The other attack, 'Hide,' doesn't deal any damage at all, focusing instead on defense.

When comparing Petilil to other Basic Grass-type attackers, it simply can't keep up in terms of raw damage output.

Even with Grass-type support cards, Petilil's offensive potential remains severely limited, making it difficult to threaten opposing Pokémon effectively in tournament play.

Survival Score Image Survival rating: 4/10

Despite its low 60 HP, Petilil has a surprisingly interesting defensive option.

The 'Hide' attack, costing just one Colorless Energy, gives you a coin flip chance to completely prevent all damage and effects during your opponent's next turn.

This coin-flip protection can occasionally save Petilil from being knocked out, buying precious time.

However, the 50% success rate makes this an unreliable defense strategy in competitive play.

Add in the common Fire weakness and a single-energy retreat cost, and Petilil ends up with modest survivability at best.

In a meta where 60 HP can be knocked out easily, even its defensive attack can't fully compensate.

Versatility Score Image Versatility rating: 3/10

Petilil demonstrates limited versatility in the current competitive landscape.

As a Basic Pokémon that evolves into Lilligant, its primary purpose is to serve as evolution fodder rather than stand on its own.

The 'Hide' attack does provide a unique defensive option that works against any type of attack, giving it some utility against certain matchups.

However, with minimal damage output and reliance on coin flips, Petilil struggles to adapt to various situations.

Its single Colorless retreat cost does allow for some mobility in switching strategies, but overall, Petilil lacks the multi-role flexibility that more versatile cards bring to tournament decks.

setup Score Image Speed/Setup rating: 8/10

On the positive side, Petilil shines in setup speed as a Basic Pokémon that can be played immediately to the field.

It requires minimal energy investment, with both attacks costing just one energy each (Colorless for Hide, Grass for Leafage).

This means Petilil can be operational from the very first turn, providing at least some functionality while you build your board.

Additionally, as a Basic Pokémon with a common name, it benefits from various search cards like Nest Ball, Quick Ball, or Level Ball, making it consistently accessible when needed.

The low energy requirement and immediate playability earn Petilil solid marks for speed despite its other limitations.

Petilil works best as evolution material for Lilligant, so your deck should focus on evolution acceleration and protection.

Cards that allow quick evolution or recycling Basic Pokémon provide the best support.

Energy acceleration and tools that boost survivability can help Petilil stay alive long enough to evolve.

Perfect Partners examples:

Bypasses the need to keep Petilil on the field for a turn, allowing immediate evolution to Lilligant if Petilil was just placed during that turn. This significantly reduces the risk of having this vulnerable Basic knocked out before evolving.

Allows you to search your deck for a Grass Pokémon to add to your hand each turn, helping ensure you have access to either Petilil or its evolution when needed. Provides crucial consistency for evolution-based strategies.

This Tool card prevents all effects of attacks from your opponent's Pokémon done to the Pokémon this card is attached to. Pairs well with Petilil, giving it additional protection beyond its Hide attack.

Petilil represents a typical first-stage evolution card with more potential as evolution material than as a standalone attacker.

Its key strength lies in being immediately playable with low energy requirements, allowing for quick setup in Grass-type evolution strategies.

The Hide attack offers an interesting coin-flip defense mechanism that occasionally buys crucial time, while the low retreat cost provides welcome flexibility.

However, its meager damage output, low HP, and reliance on chance effects severely limit its tournament viability on its own.

Players should view Petilil primarily as a stepping stone to Lilligant, protected with the right tools and support cards while racing to evolve as quickly as possible.

In the highly competitive TCG environment, Petilil fills a specific role in evolution chains but needs significant support to maximize its limited potential.
